Name of Organization Founder and Year Founded
Dr. Edmund O. Schweitzer, III, incorporated SEL in 1982 through the development and manufacturing of the world’s first all-digital protective relay, which revolutionized the power protection industry. Dr. Schweitzer received his Bachelor's degree and his Master's degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University. He received his Ph.D. degree from Washington State University. In 1984, SEL shipped its first products to Otter Tail Power Company in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Today, SEL sells to virtually every electric utility in the United States and has customers in over 100 countries around the world.
